Being a teen has never been easy. Today, it's more complicated than ever.

Between academic pressure, social media, friendship dynamics, and family stress, teens find themselves asking, “Who am I supposed to be?” They’re carrying a lot. Sometimes it shows up as anxiety. Other days, it’s burnout, big emotions, withdrawal, or just feeling completely overwhelmed. It may seem like they’re acting out, but maybe they’re looking for a helping hand and just don’t know where to turn.

At Arizona Developmental Psychology, we help teens untangle their feelings, understand what’s going on, and build coping skills to make adolescence less complex and more enjoyable.

What Therapy Can Do For Your Teen

Teens often hold a lot in. Between academic stress, social pressure, identity questions, and family dynamics, there’s a lot happening underneath the surface. Sometimes it’s easier to talk to someone outside the family.

Our teen therapists use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), interpersonal skills training, group therapy for teens, and neurofeedback as a brain-based option when appropriate. Sessions are focused on practical tools your teen can use in everyday life.

Beyond addressing what’s hard right now, teen therapy helps your teen build confidence, develop coping skills, and strengthen their relationships with family, friends, and themselves. We work collaboratively with parents through parent support and family coaching, so progress in session translates to stronger communication and connection at home.

Is Therapy Right for My Teen?

Adolescence is full of ups and downs, and not every hard season needs therapy. That said, therapy may be a good fit if your teen is struggling with:

School, friendships, social situations, or panic attacks

Persistent sadness, low motivation, or feelings of worthlessness

Anger, frustration, or feeling overwhelmed by big feelings”

Overwhelm from academics, activities, or constant expectations

Self-doubt, harsh self-talk, or constant comparison

Pressure around appearance, food, or a changing body

rama, feeling left out, or trouble making meaningful connections

Dating stress, breakups, or navigating intimacy for the first time

Arguments at home, feeling misunderstood, or growing distance

Trouble paying attention, finishing tasks, or staying on top of school

Online comparison, group chat drama, or feeling drained from being plugged in

Worry about college, careers, or “what comes next”

The goal in teen therapy is to give your teen tools, language, and confidence to navigate this stage of life and the ones to come.

Match With a Teen Psychologist or Therapist in Phoenix, AZ

Our team of skilled clinicians brings warmth, expertise, and genuine understanding to every session. We blend real clinical skill with a whole lot of heart, helping teens find their voice and helping parents stay connected through it all.

We Get to Know Your Teen

During a free 20-minute consultation, we meet with you and your teen separately so we can understand their unique needs, build trust from the start, and match them with the right therapist.

We Build a Plan That Fits Your Teen

Together, we clarify your goals and your teen's needs, then develop a personalized plan based on their communication style, what they want to work on, and where they need the most support. We adjust as we go to make sure therapy keeps fitting who they are.

We Support Their Growth Over Time

Sessions are typically 60 minutes and include a brief parent check-in, with the bulk of the time dedicated to your teen to protect their privacy and confidentiality. We focus on real-life skills and steady progress, and your teen is always welcome to return as life evolves.

Our Approach

How Our Teen Therapy Works

Adolescence is not a problem to be solved, but a chapter to be lived.

Still have questions?
We'd love to help you find the answers.

Therapy can be helpful when your teen is experiencing ongoing emotional, behavioral, or academic challenges that are impacting daily life, relationships, or well-being. Parent involvement is important, particularly early on, as it helps us understand your teen’s environment and support system. While we value your input, the primary focus of therapy is your teen, and involvement becomes more intentional over time as skills develop and confidence grows.

Your teen’s therapy sessions are confidential within standard legal and ethical limits, like concerns about immediate safety or court requirements. Confidentiality helps teens feel safe opening up. At the same time, our therapists work collaboratively with parents by sharing general themes, the skills being taught, and ways you can support progress at home, without sharing private details your teen wants kept confidential. This balance supports both trust and family connection.

Most teens begin with weekly sessions to build momentum and emotional regulation. As progress is made, some families transition to biweekly or maintenance sessions. Every teen is different, but many families notice meaningful changes around the 2 to 3 month mark, with continued growth and confidence building over time. We regularly check in and adjust the plan based on your teen’s needs and goals.

Progress can look different for every teen, but parents often notice fewer emotional outbursts, improved mood, better focus or sleep, and more ease in relationships at home or at school. Our teen therapists also set clear, measurable goals and review them regularly so progress is visible. If something isn’t helping, we adjust the approach; therapy is meant to evolve as your teen does.

A lot of teens come in skeptical, guarded, or just plain not wanting to be there, and that’s okay. We don’t need your teen to be excited about therapy on day one. We just need them to give it a chance.

Our therapists and psychologists are trained to meet teens exactly where they are. We don’t push, lecture, or treat sessions like an interrogation. We let your teen lead, build trust at their own pace, and focus on what actually matters to them. Most teens who walk in hesitantly tell us, a few sessions in, that they don’t want to stop coming.

If your teen is open to a free 20-minute consult, that’s often the best starting point. It lets them ask questions, get a feel for the therapist, and decide what feels right without any pressure.

In Arizona, parents are typically involved in therapy decisions until age 18. That said, we believe teens deserve to be active participants in their own care from day one. Our approach is to give teens meaningful input, listen to their goals, and respect their preferences (like therapist match, session format, and what they want to work on), while keeping you informed and supported as a parent.

If your teen is 17 or transitioning toward adulthood, we’ll also talk through what changes once they turn 18, including how confidentiality, scheduling, and parent involvement may shift. The goal is a smooth handoff into adulthood, with your teen feeling confident and equipped to advocate for their own well-being.

This is a very common concern. When therapy hasn’t worked in the past, it’s often related to fit, approach, or timing, rather than therapy itself. At Arizona Developmental Psychology, we use a collaborative, culturally sensitive, nervous-system-aware approach and move at a pace that feels supportive and practical. Fit matters. If the first therapist isn’t the right match, we offer a warm handoff within our team so your teen doesn’t have to start over.

Sometimes. For some teens, therapy alone leads to enough improvement that medication may not be needed. For others, the most effective support comes from a combination of therapy and medication. Any medication decisions should be made with your teen’s prescriber, and we’re happy to collaborate as part of coordinated care. For some teens, neurofeedback can also be a helpful addition to therapy by supporting attention, emotional regulation, and the body’s stress response. When used thoughtfully, therapy and neurofeedback can complement one another and support progress over time.

Yes. Many teens do very well with virtual therapy, while others prefer in-person sessions, and some benefit most from a hybrid approach. Talk-based and skills-based therapy can be highly effective online, and some teens feel more comfortable opening up from home. Others prefer the structure and connection of meeting in person, particularly early on. We work with families to choose the format that best supports your teen’s needs, goals, and comfort level, and this can change over time.

Great question! Therapy and assessments serve different purposes. An assessment helps you understand what’s going on underneath the struggles (the why and how your teen’s brain works), while therapy helps your teen build skills to manage what they’re experiencing day to day. Alongside teen therapy, we offer Psychoeducational Assessments, ADHD Testing, Autism Assessments, and IQ Testing. We’ll help you figure out what makes the most sense during your free consult.
