Neurofeedback Therapy in Phoenix, AZ

A gentle, brain-based approach for nervous systems stuck in overdrive.

In-person LENS Neurofeedback at our Phoenix, AZ office. Serving kids (2+), teens, and adults across the greater Phoenix area.

When "doing all the right things" still leaves you exhausted.

You’ve tried the routines, the coping strategies, the better sleep habits, and the long list of “things that should help.” But your or your child’s system still feels stuck. The mind won’t slow down. Small stressors feel big. Even rest doesn’t fully restore.

This isn’t about effort or willpower. Sometimes a nervous system gets stuck in high alert, after years of stress, trauma, neurodevelopmental differences, or simply pushing through.

Neurofeedback therapy can help your brain find its way back to balance.

What Neurofeedback Can Do For You or Your Child

You can’t talk your way out of an overactive nervous system.

Therapy helps. Strategies help. But sometimes the brain itself needs a reset. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, science-backed approach that helps the brain notice when it’s working too hard or not enough, and guides it back to balance. It doesn’t force change; it gives the brain the information it needs to self-adjust.

At Arizona Developmental Psychology, we focus on how your nervous system is functioning, not just on a diagnosis. Where is it overfiring or stuck in high alert? Where would small shifts make daily life feel lighter? Those are the questions LENS helps answer.

Many people come to LENS when:

  • Therapy, medication, or learning interventions have helped, but progress has stalled
  • They need renewed hope and a clear path forward
  • They want to make the supports they’re already using more effective
  • They are looking to enhance their daily functioning and performance

LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) is a particularly gentle form of neurofeedback that works with the nervous system instead of requiring focus, effort, or “training.” Using extremely low energy (less than a cellphone), it gives the brain a brief reflection of its own activity. The brain notices the pattern. The brain adjusts. You sit comfortably while it happens.

Most people don’t feel much in the moment. Changes show up gradually afterward, in better sleep, calmer mornings, fewer emotional spikes, more energy, increased mental clarity, and a body that finally feels like it can rest.

Is LENS Neurofeedback Right for You?

Neurofeedback isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, but it can be a powerful option when life feels harder than it should. LENS may be a good fit if you or your child are dealing with:

Persistent worry, irritability, panic, or feeling constantly on edge

Difficulty with focus, organization, task initiation, and follow-through

Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up feeling unrested

Emotional ups and downs, shutdown, numbness, or chronic mental exhaustion

Slower processing, mental fatigue, screen intolerance, or busy environments feeling like “too much”

Support for ADHD, autism, OCD, PDA, and sensory sensitivities

Support alongside dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and other learning disorders.

When the nervous system stays stuck in fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown

When therapy, medication, or learning interventions haven’t gotten you or your child far enough

When your brain finds its frequency, everything, including focus, sleep, relationships, and energy, begins to fall into place again. LENS neurofeedback can make that possible.

How LENS Neurofeedback Supports Real Change

Girl enjoying a walk in the city park

LENS Neurofeedback at Arizona Developmental Psychology supports and strengthens:

Falling asleep more easily, sleeping more deeply, and waking up feeling actually rested. Less “tired but wired,” more genuine restoration.

Fewer emotional blowups, faster recovery from frustration, less rumination, and more space between feeling and reaction.

Reading, schoolwork, projects, and daily routines becoming more manageable as attention and task initiation get easier.

Less reactivity, less sensory overwhelm, and a body that finally feels like it can settle, with deeper breathing, dropped shoulders, and real physical ease.

Fewer “really hard” days, more reliable access to coping skills, and the ability to keep showing up as yourself, even when life gets challenging.

Renewed self-trust, more presence in relationships, and the ability to enjoy daily life again.

Meet Our Team

Match With a Neurofeedback Provider in Phoenix, AZ

Our team offers LENS neurofeedback as part of an integrated care model, meaning it’s never used in isolation. We combine LENS with therapy, executive functioning coaching, and assessment-based recommendations to support lasting change. Dr. Amanda Hackwell leads our neurofeedback program, with additional trained providers expanding our capacity to support more families.

We Get to Know You & How Your System Functions

We start with a thorough intake to understand the full picture. This means looking at attention, learning demands, emotional regulation, sleep, daily routines, organization, follow-through, stress, and life responsibilities. When helpful, brain map data can help identify areas of dysregulation and guide your LENS protocol.

We Create a Personalized Plan

Together, we set goals based on what matters most to you. Kids' goals are often more focus, smoother homework time, and fewer emotional meltdowns. Adults often focus on mental clarity, emotional balance, organization, and reduced overwhelm. Sessions are gentle and require no active "training." Just sit comfortably while LENS gives the brain the feedback it needs.

We Support Progress Over Time

Most people notice early shifts within 6 to 10 sessions. Lasting results typically take 20 to 30 sessions for many clients, and 30 to 40+ for more complex needs like long-standing stress, trauma, or layered neurodevelopmental differences. We check in regularly, adjust your plan, and often combine LENS with therapy, executive functioning coaching, and supportive strategies so the changes stick.

LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) is a non-invasive, science-backed form of neurofeedback that works more like a mirror than a training exercise. Using ultra-low electromagnetic feedback (far less energy than a cellphone), it gives the brain brief “reflections” of its own activity, helping it notice patterns where it may be stuck in anxiety, over-arousal, or shutdown. The brain then has the opportunity to recalibrate and shift those patterns naturally.

Sessions are brief (typically 15 to 25 minutes), and you don’t need to play a game, focus, or “do anything right.” You simply sit comfortably with your neurofeedback technician while we monitor how your system responds.

LENS is designed to work gently with the nervous system, which makes it a strong fit for many kids and adults, particularly those who are sensitive or easily overwhelmed.

Benefits of LENS compared to traditional neurofeedback:

  • No effort required, no games, screens, or trying to “focus correctly”
  • Very gentle and low energy (less than everyday electronics)
  • Short sessions, easier to fit into busy schedules
  • Often better tolerated by sensitive or easily overwhelmed nervous systems
  • Can be helpful when traditional neurofeedback feels too demanding or overstimulating
  • Works well alongside therapy and executive functioning coaching

Traditional neurofeedback uses reward-based feedback (watching a movie, playing a simple game) to help the brain strengthen healthier patterns over time. It’s a great fit for people who can tolerate longer sessions and engage actively. LENS is the better fit when active participation is hard, or when the nervous system needs to settle before higher-level training can really stick.

Yes. LENS Neurofeedback is drug-free, non-invasive, and safe for children, teens, and adults. It’s been used worldwide for over 30 years and is particularly well-suited for sensitive nervous systems. The feedback signals are extremely gentle, often less energy than a digital watch.

Some clients may notice temporary shifts like mild fatigue, vivid dreams, or increased emotional awareness as the brain recalibrates, but these typically pass quickly. All sessions are individualized and closely monitored for comfort and safety.

LENS neurofeedback is often a strong option for:

  • Children who struggle to sit still, follow instructions, or tolerate longer sessions
  • Individuals with ADHD, particularly when emotional regulation or reactivity is a concern
  • Those with OCD, PDA, autism, or sensory sensitivities
  • Kids or adults with anxiety, chronic stress, or trauma histories
  • People exhausted from having to “try harder” in other treatments, or who haven’t gotten enough from medication alone
  • Families looking for a low-effort, brain-based support that doesn’t rely on motivation or performance

LENS can be especially helpful when the nervous system feels stuck in fight, flight, or shutdown and needs help settling before higher-level skills can take hold.

Most children and adults don’t feel much during a LENS session. You sit comfortably while small sensors monitor your brain’s activity. There’s nothing to do, nothing to focus on, and no game to win. Sessions are short and low-effort by design.

Changes are usually noticed afterward and gradually, like better sleep over the next few nights, calmer mornings the following week, fewer emotional spikes over the next month, or a body that just feels less tense.

Most people start to notice early shifts within 6 to 10 sessions. For lasting, stable change, a typical course includes 20 to 30 sessions, and 30 to 40+ for more complex needs like long-standing stress, trauma, or layered neurodevelopmental differences. At Arizona Developmental Psychology, we check in regularly and adjust your plan as your nervous system recalibrates.

Yes. Neurofeedback can often be used alongside medication for both children and adults. As LENS neurofeedback in Phoenix, AZ, helps the brain regulate itself more efficiently, some people may become more sensitive to their medication over time. If signs of over-medication appear, it’s usually because the brain is functioning more effectively, not because anything is wrong. In those cases, we recommend working closely with your prescribing provider to determine whether adjustments are appropriate. We prioritize monitoring, communication, and collaboration so care stays safe and well-coordinated.

Beautifully. LENS is often most effective when combined with other support, like child therapy, teen therapy, or assessment-based recommendations from a psychoeducational assessment, ADHD evaluation, or autism assessment. Neurofeedback helps the nervous system settle so therapy, coaching, and skill-building can actually take hold. Many families describe it as the brain finally being calm enough to use the strategies it’s learning everywhere else.

Research suggests the benefits of LENS are often long-lasting. Many individuals maintain their improvements after treatment ends, and some continue to see additional gains over time as the brain strengthens healthier regulation patterns. For some people, particularly during periods of growth, stress, or major life changes, occasional booster sessions may be helpful. We’ll always guide you thoughtfully. The goal is lasting progress with support only as needed.

We’re an out-of-network provider and offer flexible payment options, including CareCredit, HSA/FSA, ESA, cash, and major credit cards. We also provide a superbill you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement. We’ll walk you through current pricing, session estimates, and payment options during your free 20-minute consultation so you know exactly what to expect before getting started.
