What is ADHD Testing?
ADHD testing, or an ADHD assessment, is a comprehensive evaluation of how attention, focus, impulse control, and emotional regulation are affecting your or your child’s daily life. It looks at the full picture, including symptoms, developmental history, real-world impact, and the strengths that often come with an ADHD brain.
ADHD shows up in three main ways:
- Inattentive Presentation: Trouble focusing, following through, organizing, and remembering details
- Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Restlessness, fidgeting, impulsive decisions, and difficulty waiting
- Combined Presentation: A mix of both
It’s not about giving out a label. It’s about understanding how your brain works so you can stop fighting it and start working with it.
We evaluate ADHD for kids (5+), teens, and adults. We don’t just hand you a diagnosis. We help you understand what’s going on and give you a clear, practical plan for what to do next at school, at work, and at home.

Signs An ADHD Assessment May Help
Wondering if it’s time to look deeper? ADHD testing may be the right next step if you or your child are showing signs like:
Constant reminders needed
For basic tasks like getting ready, finishing work, or remembering appointments
Effort that doesn't match results
Working twice as hard for half the outcome
Big emotional reactions
Multi-step instructions, deadlines, or important things slipping through
Hyperfocus and freeze
Meltdowns, frustration, or feeling overwhelmed by what seem like small things
Hyperfocus and freeze
Locked in on what’s interesting, stuck on what isn’t
"Smart but struggling"
Hearing “you’re so capable, why is this so hard?” on repeat
Workarounds breaking down
The systems you (or your child) built to compensate just aren’t working anymore
Internalized self-doubt
Years of trying and still believing “I’m not good enough”
If you’re nodding along, ADHD testing can help you finally understand what’s going on, so you can stop blaming yourself and start moving forward.

What An ADHD Assessment Can Clarify
An ADHD evaluation at Arizona Developmental Psychology can help with:
School or Work Functioning
A clearer picture of how attention, learning, and organization work for you or your child, plus personalized strategies that support stronger focus, follow-through, and real confidence across school, work, and daily responsibilities.
Emotional Regulation
Relationships at Home, School, & Work
ADHD can put real strain on communication, memory, and impulse control. An evaluation clarifies these patterns and supports healthier communication, greater self-awareness, and stronger connections at home, with friends, and in the workplace.
Social Confidence
Children may improve at reading social cues, managing frustration during play, and building positive peer interactions. Teens often navigate friendships with more confidence. Adults gain self-awareness around long-standing social patterns and feel more comfortable in personal and professional settings.
Overwhelm, Confidence, & Self-Compassion
Self-blame is one of the hardest parts of living with undiagnosed ADHD. An evaluation replaces “What’s wrong with me?” with “Here’s how my brain works.” That shift alone, paired with personalized strategies, can change everything.

Initial Consultation
Read More
Like with a psychoeducational assessment, we start with a consultation to talk through your concerns, answer your questions, and figure out whether an ADHD evaluation is the right next step. We’ll review scope, timeline, and cost so you know what to expect, and make sure the fit feels right.

Background & Developmental History
Read More
We gather thoughtful background information to understand the whole person, not just the current concerns. This may include interviews, questionnaires, and (with consent) input from teachers, partners, or other providers. Everything is handled with care and confidentiality.

Comprehensive Testing
Read More
In-person testing is tailored to age and referral questions, and may assess attention, executive functioning, memory, processing speed, and learning skills. We also use questionnaires to understand how challenges show up across home, school, work, and relationships, so we get a complete picture.

Feedback, Diagnosis, & Next Steps
Read More
You’ll receive a comprehensive written report and a one-hour feedback session to walk through the results, answer your questions, and build a clear plan. Recommendations are practical and personalized, and may include school or workplace strategies, therapy, ADHD coaching, neurofeedback, medical referrals, or everyday tools for managing focus and emotions.
Understanding ADHD helps shift the narrative from self-blame to self-understanding. Our goal is not to change who someone is, but to help them understand their brain, value their differences, and use their strengths intentionally so they can thrive at school, at work, and in daily life.

ADHD by the Numbers
That’s the average wait for an ADHD evaluation. Many families wait a year or more.
Their symptoms tend to look quieter, more compliant, or hidden behind effort and good grades.
Not because ADHD is that much more common in boys, but because their symptoms tend to be louder and more visible.
Who you work with matters. Our team brings 30+ years of combined experience helping families and adults find ADHD support that works.
Why get an ADHD evaluation if I'm not sure it's ADHD?
Even if you’re unsure, an ADHD evaluation can clarify how attention, executive functioning, learning, and emotional regulation are impacting daily life. If ADHD is identified, you’ll have clear next steps and support. If not, the evaluation still explains what’s driving the concerns and provides practical recommendations either way.
How do you know if it's ADHD or something else (like anxiety, burnout, or learning differences)?
Many concerns can look like ADHD. Sometimes they overlap with it, sometimes they mimic it, and sometimes both are happening at once. At Arizona Developmental Psychology, we take a whole-picture approach to untangle the layers and identify what’s actually driving the struggles, so the plan fits what’s really going on.
Can you have ADHD and still be smart, successful, or do well in school or work?
Yes. ADHD isn’t about intelligence or effort. It’s about how the brain manages focus, organization, and regulation. Many people compensate well until demands increase, structure decreases, or stress builds. That’s often when the cracks start to show.
Is there one test that definitively diagnoses ADHD?
No. ADHD is a clinical diagnosis based on symptoms, developmental history, and real-world impact, not a single test. We use a multi-step process that may include interviews, standardized rating scales, and (when appropriate) additional testing to ensure accuracy and rule out other possibilities.
What if the evaluation shows it's not ADHD?
That outcome is still valuable. A thorough evaluation can rule out ADHD and clarify what is contributing, like anxiety, depression, learning differences, sleep issues, trauma, or executive functioning challenges. Either way, you leave with clarity, insight, and personalized recommendations.
If ADHD is diagnosed, what treatment options are available, and does that mean medication?
Treatment is individualized and often includes therapy, executive functioning or ADHD coaching, school or workplace accommodations, neurofeedback, and lifestyle strategies. Medication is one possible option, and we recommend speaking with a physician about medication management when symptoms significantly impact daily functioning. We don’t prescribe, but we collaborate with prescribers as part of coordinated care.
My child (or I) has been evaluated. What happens next?
An ADHD evaluation is just the beginning. Once you have answers, the next step is matching them with the right support. Depending on what the evaluation uncovers, we can help with ADHD coaching, executive functioning support, therapy for kids, teens, or adults, neurofeedback as a brain-based non-medication option, parent coaching, and referrals to trusted physicians if medication is being considered. Because everything happens under one roof, you don’t have to start over with a new provider.
How much does an ADHD evaluation cost?
Our evaluations range from $2,250 to $4,500, depending on the scope and complexity of the assessment. We provide a detailed quote so you know exactly what’s included.
We’re an out-of-network provider and offer flexible payment options, including CareCredit, HSA/FSA, ESA, cash, and major credit cards. We also provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement. Many families are surprised to find their insurance covers more than they expected.
Do I need a referral to schedule an ADHD evaluation?
No referral is required. You can reach out to us directly to book a free consultation or schedule an evaluation. If your physician, pediatrician, or your child’s school suggested looking into ADHD testing, that’s a helpful context to share, but it isn’t a prerequisite. Many of our clients come to us simply because something hasn’t felt right and they’re ready for real answers.
Will my child's school accept this evaluation for accommodations?
Yes. Our evaluations are designed to meet the documentation standards that schools typically require for 504 Plans, IEPs, and classroom accommodations. Because our entire team is trained as both clinical psychologists and school psychologists, we know exactly what schools need to see, how to phrase recommendations the school can actually implement, and how to help you navigate the IEP and 504 process from the parent side. You’ll leave with a report you can take directly to your school team.
If your child already has accommodations in place, we can help you fine-tune them. If you’re just starting to explore options, we’ll guide you through it step by step.
